An early Port Fairy home furnished as a working mans home in the late 19 th century. Enjoy the pretty garden and admire the old sundial in the gazebo.

Soak up the history of Port Fairy & district. See the Shipwreck Room, the cell, the mortuary slab, the original court furniture & the special display featuring two of our early shopkeepers, Mrs Robinson – haberdashery & her husband Mr Robinson – bootmaker.

The Little Doll House Museum , James Street Open from 9.30

Beautiful dolls from all era's, gorgeous old bisque headed dolls, pedigree dolls from the 1950's and of course Barbie in all her glory. Interesting things for the boys as well.

Come on a Guided Walk at 2pm

Leave from the visitor information centre. Adults $2, accompanied children free. Tall tales and true from Port Fairy's exciting past.

That in 1853 1773 ounces of gold were shipped from the port.

Bay Trips from the Historic Wharf

Succumb to the lure of the sea. Boat trips leave regularly from the wharf, weather permitting. Many ships have been wrecked in and around Port Fairy. Heritage Victoria protects these wrecks however snorkellers are welcome to explore them.

That commercial shark fishing began in Victoria at Port Fairy in the 1960's

Find a family Heirloom

Follow the Art Trail available from the Visitor Information Centre. This walk will lead you past the studios of our working arts who are inspired by our beautiful town and district. Works are in a variety of mediums including on paper, glass, silver and fabric.

Did you know?

That the stonemasons were the first tradesman to be awarded an 8 hour day and many Port Fairy masons were on the 8 hour day committee.

Go to Church

Our beautiful churches all hold regular services and times are available from the Visitor Information Centre. St John's Anglican Church is always open to the public and visitors are most welcome. Enter by the north door. The church features a magnificent pipe organ which is listed on the National Heritage register. There are many memorial tablets to pioneer residents and families and a magnificent baptismal font by 19 th century stonemason Walter McGill.

Did you know?

Rolf Boldrewood (real name Thomas Browne) author of the famous Australian novel “Robbery Under Arms” lived in the Port Fairy district for a number of years. He was quite a “young man about town” and held regular horse sales in the yard of the Caledonian Hotel.

Did you know?

That in 1855 the Melbourne Cricket Club visited Port Fairy to play the Port Fairy Cricket Club. Melbourne won!

 
Visit the Port Fairy Cemetery – Princes Hwy (west side)

The cemetery is the final resting place for many of the district pioneers.

Some graves date from the 1840's. Look for the headstone written in Gaelic, the grave of the unknown bushranger and the interesting Victorian era headstones. Open all the time.

That Errol Flynn's grandmother was born in Port Fairy – yes it's true!

 

Why not visit Koroit – around 16 km east of Port Fairy

Koroit once had the highest concentration of Irish settlers in Victoria . The town has lovely botanical gardens, many historic buildings and is situated on the northern rim of the Tower Hill State Game Reserve.

Tower Hill State Game Reserve – around 14km east of Port Fairy

Do you love koalas, bushwalking, emus, kangaroos, the smell of the bush – then you'll love Tower Hill. Open all day – no cost.

Did you know?

While blasting rock in the Moyne River Isaac Smale was attacked by a giant octopus which he eventually fought off and killed.


Stop and smell the roses lavender .

The Tower Hill Lavender Farm is open all weekend. 20 Carey Lane, Tower Hill. A brochure with a map is available from the Port Fairy Information Centre.

The farm features over 100 varieties of lavender and the shop stocks many lovely lavender products.

Don't forget the muttonbirds!

Each evening just on dark (about 7.15pm AEST or 8.15pm daylight saving time) thousands of these fabulous birds will fly onto Griffiths Island . This they have done since time immemorial.

Visit Battery Hill – Cnr Battery Lane & Griffiths Street

A fabulous collection of historic cannons, a flagstaff and the little bluestone powder magazine make this a must see attraction.

Did you know?

That Port Fairy jockey Pat Hyland won the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double on the horse “What a Nuisance' in 1985.
