Constructed in 1848

Celtic Cottage is one of the original limestone dwellings of Port Fairy.

Families have lived in this house since before:

  • Gold was discovered in Victoria - 1851
  • Ned Kelly was born - 1854
  • Bourke and Wills embarked on their ill fated Expedition - 1860

News would have been slow coming because not even Sydney and Melbourne were linked by electric telegraph until 1858.

But their weekly newspaper will have eventually reported:

  • The Eureka Stockade uprising in Ballarat - 1854
  • The Charles Darwin publication Origin of Species - 1859
  • The first Melbourne Cup - 1861
  • The American Civil War - 1861 to 1865
  • The first sighting of Uluru by Europeans (and named Ayers Rock) - 1873
  • The Loch Ard disaster - 1878
  • Ned Kelly hung - 1880
  • Parliament House Victoria opens- 1855
    Exhibition Buildings open- 1880

Port Fairy

at one time the second most busy port in the colony with a history based on Whaling and Sealing and later a commercial port and center for Western District farming interests.

Modern day residents of Port Fairy have settled into an enviable lifestyle sustained by a variety of agricultural, commercial and industrial interests as well as a strong tourist industry.

According to travel industry writers, Port Fairy is the preferred holiday destination for Victorians and was recently named the fifth best town in Australia.
